Campaign for Development and Solidarity |
Since 1981 FORUT, Campaign for Development and Solidarity, has been engaged in development cooperation in Sri Lanka, India, The Maldives, Senegal, The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Nepal. The Norwegian peace and temperance organisations IOGT, Juvente and IOGT Junior are behind FORUT, whose main office is situated in the little town of Gjøvik in the southeastern part of Norway.
Several years of active engagement in the project countries and in Norway have made FORUT an acknowledged organisation nationally as well as internationally.
Each year FORUT receives a considerable sum of money from the Norwegian Government and from Norwegian and foreign partners. Funds are also raised through the FORUT donor service and campaigns run in schools and kindergartens. More than 25,000 children participated in FORUT operated information and fund raising activities in 1995.
Responsibility, Participation and Cooperation
FORUT's policy is that people should tke responsibility for their own development and not become dependent on aid. An important htmlect of FORUT's programme is to create a public awareness of the reasons for poverty and to mobilise human as well as material resources. Collaboration, introduction of thrift and credit schemes, and initiating income generating activities are important elements of the fight against poverty. FORUT's development projects are implemented in close collaboration with local organisations. In the majority of FORUT's projects the issue of alcohol and drugs is an integrated part.
The projects are small in scale and simple with the strategy aimed at sustainable development. FORUT has regular donors who make monthly contributions. FORUT emphasises the importance of cooperating with local organisations and tries to use them as a basis for social mobilisation and development. Smaller branches of FORUT exist in Switzerland and Germany.
FORUT is currently working in several countries:
